Mt Kilimanjaro – An Ecological Surprise

If you are looking for a unique place to visit try exploring Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Kilimanjaro has a wide variety of flora and fauna as you trek up its slopes as well as several different ecosystems. Hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro routes will take you through a tour of life on Earth, from the bottom to the top, in its entire splendor.

Starting at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro it is surrounded by savannah. Beautiful grasses and crops grown by the local tribe makes a beautiful entrance to the mountain. As you begin hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit you find yourself in incredible forests. The truly amazing thing is that if you are on the south side you will find yourself in what is called montane forest, but if you are on the north side you will be in coniferous forests for a completely different environment!

Then as you climb higher you will discover the moorland which is covered in giant heather and the occasional giant lobelias. The moorland is an amazing sight to behold and as you continue up Mount Kilimanjaro this eventually fades away to an alpine desert. Here it seems that most life is gone except for lichens and some mosses. Continuing the trek up Mount Kilimanjaro snow will start to appear until it completely takes over the terrain bringing a cold arctic feeling with it. But then you reach the top and see the world around you with new eyes and can’t wait for the trek back down to see what else is hiding on this magnificent mountain.
