A Short History of Medical Insurance

Way back in 1694, the concept of health insurance was proposed. This evolved until the late 19 centruy when it was joined by “accident insurance” It was very similar to modern day disability insurance. Accident insurance was first offered in the United States by the Franklin Health Assurance Company out of Massachusetts.
The first health insurance plans came late in the 1800s. This led to the first employer-sponsored group policy in 1911.
Prior to the development of medical insurance, people had to pay health costs out of their own pockets. If they had little or no money, they would usually barter animals or food to pay the bill.
