From your experience, is it easy for a salsa dancer to pick up tango?
Depends what tango are you talking about. Argetine tango? Ballroom tango? There are more variations and all of them quite different like with timing etc

Salsa is at its core a pretty simple dance, and most of the salsa dancers in my area spend too much time on tricks and have pretty poor technique, so it isn’t easy for them to learn other dances, but that’s just a generalization. Of course, it’s not uncommon for people to be mesmerized by the flashy moves in tango as well, and spend too much time on ganchos, boleos and such, and too little on good basics.

As noted above, there are a number of different styles. Going into the steps is easy for anyone who’s taken any other dance classes, or martial arts for that matter. Following and leading are easily-translatable skills. The positions for both Tangos are very different than Salsa, though, and for Argentine one would need to get used to the idea that one move doesn’t necessarily follow another, and you don’t dance a ‘basic’ to the beat, while for Ballroom you need to get used to fitting 5 steps into 4 beats and a traveling basic (as opposed to 3 steps and a stationary basic, as in Salsa) .
To coin a metaphor, ballroom (including Ballroom Tango) and most latin dances are metered poems, while Argentine Tango is free verse.
