Are there any REALLY GOOD arguments against gay marriage?
All of the ones I’ve heard are very weak arguments at their best.
POINT: It would ruin the foundation of our society.
COUNTER-POINT: Even though this assertion is ridiculous, if the foundations of our society are so weak as to be ruined by gay marriage, then let it be ruined.
POINT: It does not fit the traditional definition of marriage.
COUNTER-POINT: What do you call an iPhone that is rendered useless by Apple after being hacked? Give up? It’s called a brick. Should Apple be barred from rendering iPhones useless just because the resulting product doesn’t fit the traditional definition of a brick? Should black people have been denied basic civil rights because the traditional definition of rights did not include them?
POINT: It’s gross.
COUNTER-POINT: Then let’s outlaw mud too.
POINT: It goes against nature.
COUNTER-POINT: Really? Aren’t humans a part of nature? And what about Tango’s dads? (See the children’s book "And Tango Makes Three," which is based on a true story). If you think it’s unnatural, and that homosexuality is a choice, then is that to say you COULD be homosexual but choose not to be? I know I couldn’t.
POINT: It’s a sin against God.
COUNTER-POINT: God makes rules for you to follow. I can’t argue against that. However, put yourself in the shoes of non-followers:
If my Aunt Jemima bottle started talking to me and started making all kinds of rules, I wouldn’t go around trying to assert the laws of Aunt Jemima. Even though she declares herself to be a supreme authority, and says that to not follow her would mean spending eternity on a griddle, that would be between them and Aunt Jemima. And get this… Aunt Jemima says that heterosexual marriage is a sin, and anyone who engages in a heterosexual lifestyle will be damned.
POINT: Children who are adopted by gay couples will be confused, traumatized, weird, or gay.
COUNTER-POINT: Statistics don’t support that claim. Furthermore, Osama Bin Laden, Adolf Hitler, John Wayne Gacy, and Charles Manson were all born and raised by straight couples. Does that mean the children of straight couples are insane mass murderers? No. But it does show that no one is immune to planting some bad seeds or becoming a bad seed. Whether by nature or nurture, those people are horrible, evil, weird, confused, and one of them is gay.
Aya-Louise, you have the burden of proof. How exactly are a father and mother better able to raise a child than someone who has two fathers or two mothers? How is it that divorce is legal, and that single parents are abundant?
James — good thinking. But gay marriage isn’t even close to being like the Nebraska Safe Haven law. The laws can be crafted carefully, but very simply, by defining marriage as a legal union between two people who are of sound mind and otherwise able to consent. The lawmakers are eloquent whizzes when it comes to carefully constructing laws. What would take tweezers and needlenose pliers for you and me, they can chuck out in chickenscratch while sitting on the john.
POINT: (What Jess said)
COUNTER POINT: Again, your Revelation, Genesis, and Roman is my Aunt Jemima. They mean something to those who believe in the Bible. To those who don’t believe in it, it’s like you’re quoting the Holy Book of Aunt Jemima. To recognize God as the authority over all is to look at Aunt Jemima as the authority over all. Except for the fact that it’s really old, what makes the Bible more palatable? I’m sorry somebody has told you that you are to be subservient to God and all men. Hey… wait a minute… does that mean I can control you? Wait a minute… the Bible says I have control over ALL WOMEN?!? WOO HOO!! NOW I GET IT!!!
JESUS, I BELIEVE IN YOU, AND ACCEPT YOU INTO MY HEART!!!
Now that that’s taken care of:
Jess… clean up this mess around my computer. How am I supposed to THINK with all my clutter still… bothering me?!
Sure, prostitution is illegal for moral reasons, but there is no double-standard when it comes to legislation. No monies shall be paid in exchange for sexual acts. No bias there because nobody can do it.
However, there lies a double-standard when it comes to laws regarding marriage. The double standard, as pointed out by Marilyn Voss Savant (the person with the highest IQ in the world), makes it as if it’s not legal to be a male or a female. It is legal for any adult woman to get married to ANY ONE of the millions of single men, but it is not legal for the spouse to be a female, and therefore, it is not legal to BE a female, period.
Frickin’ a — Mrs. Butterworths is who I was thinking of when I said Aunt Jemima. Mrs. Butterworths is the one that does the talking. Gosh darn you Aunt Jemima and your idolic syrup bottle! Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye have done!
LOL Didn’t you know? When us gays are allowed to get married, all heterosexual couples will suddenly spontaniously combust, children will cry uncontrollably in corners, and dogs and cats will go to the top of tall buildings and jump off!! LOL :@)

There really is no good argument. All I hear is the sin against God one. It’s always religion. But yeah, there isn’t one religion is the world so unfortunately, just because it "goes against your religion" doesn’t mean it does for everyone.
If you don’t like gay marriage, don’t get one.

Yeah, there’s no "good" arguments against gay marriage but religious ones, and religion doesn’t count when laws are made.

There is a great book that I read for a paper I wrote on gay rights and the "traditional marriages" that all these people keep claiming are the reason to prevent gay marraige. It was called "The Way We Never Were". And it talked about how the actual original marriages in the Bible were polygamous. There was no "one man, one woman" in the old testament. Basically the theory was – if you had enough money, you married as many women as you could. Thus making you a successful man.
There were a lot of things in there that I never actually knew. We listen to all the spew that people tell us and assume it’s true because we never do the research on it.
Check that book out – it’s really insightful.

Common Sense.
You have asked a question that is on here a lot but you haven’t really left us a lot to do because you have answered all the points.
There is no reason why gay people should not be allowed to marry. Most arguments stem from that old book that someone wrote thousands of years ago that people still believe in with no proof of it being true.

If you define "good" as being an argument that will convince you it’s wrong, I doubt it. If "good" means a self-consistent argument, then there are several. The predominant one is the whole "it’s against the will of God" thing. If one accepts that there is a God and that homosexuality is some sort of unforgivable sin, then that’s a good argument. It’s internally self-consistent, and in fact a lot of people buy it. If you disagree with the assumptions, though, then your mileage may vary.

No, of course not. The only ones who support the ban are straight homophobes and those trying to impose their religion on the rest of society. And those who are desperate to have some designated group to whom they can feel superior and deny rights to.
In Arizona, when the arguments to amend the state constitution to define marriage as one man and one woman were stripped of any religious justifications, the most that could be said was the proposal was short and easy to understand!

I would love to argue (that’s what I do best), but no, there really are no good arguments against. I would love to see what people will answer to your question, though…

I know plenty of kids who were raised by queer parents and they turned out really well, and those were really good
and also about the not being able to make children part of arguement, the world is already overpopulated almost no straight couple (unless sterile) would adopt, so its up to us of the GLBTQIAP community to give those kids homes

Thank goodness; I’m not the only one that Aunt Jemima talks to. NOW WORSHIP HER!
….lol
Edit: Aya-Louise, what about those in a single parent household? I grew up in one, and maybe I’m a bit eccentric, but I’m not certainly not damaged or traumatized. Two heterosexual parents doesn’t always equate to a balanced child, nor is it the only way to raise a child.
Wow, how ironic that the person with the highest IQ in the world would have the last name ‘Savant’

There’s a good arguments against it in Indonesia. A certain muslim extremist group claim that they will start to "search and destroy" as in killing gay people in Indonesia.
But it doesn’t stop me on being gay. If I should die for it, them I will gladly comply.

Those are some funny counter points especially the Aunt Jemima one that one gave me a laugh, but here is my thing, the biggest reason that the government is against gay marriage is ’cause it is a sin against god but isn’t the US supposed to have a separation of church & state, so therefore there reason is unfounded & illegal as well so therefore there is no good reason @ all that gay marriage should be banned.

I am so sick of this question!!! Marriage between gay people should be approached very carefully or we could wind up in a situation like that of Nebraska’s Safe Haven law. And then everyone would want to marry anything or anyone! I am gay, I would love to marry my partner, but I think the bigger issue at hand right now is the rights we should have for being a couple. Right now,, today, I’d much rather legally be recognized as his partner than recognized in a church as a couple. Hopefully that day will come soon! In the form of a wisely crafted law!

okay, the bill of rights thingy ( i think) says that marriage is the joining of A MAN AND A WOMAN in holy matrimony… or something stupid like that. all that needs to be changed is the MAN AND WOMAN bit. someone once said that same sex couples should not be allowed to marry as they cannot produce children… um hello, so infertile couples shouldn’t be either! or older women after menopause… men shooting blanks…
so i guess no, there is no good reason, just a bunch of lame excuses

homosexuality is part of nature. if it was not then why were people trying to seperate "gay" penguines in nyc who adobted a rock as an egg.
if you break down the religious views you have to simply read more then the "christian bible". the parts taken from the "torah". that is used against gay and lesbians. if you know the origins of this passage. "a man shall not lay down with another man as he does with a women". this passage was the laws of the jewish people so they are able to repopulate the jewish culture.
i am not jewish so why must i live by old jewish laws that are no longer are valid.

it really all depends on what you believe in. to people like Sarah Palin yes. i don’t agree with her on really anything other than her stance on the death penalty.

i would also like to point out that there are plenty of gay kids that are adopted by straight parents, and its not like they grow up traumatized, weird, or straight.

*******Leave Aunt Jemima out of this, she is so sweet********
"POINT: It’s a sin against God.

POINT: It goes against what God INTENDED upon CREATING a male and a female. In the book of Genesis, God created female from the rib of the male Adam. He said that she was to be called woman, because she was taken from man. That she was to become a compliment of him and a helper of him. It goes along the line of what the Bible describes as the arrangement of Headship. Since God is organized in all of his ways so as to create the best unity and peace possible, he has set standards of this sort so that we remain united in God’s ways. God is head over all, and as the Creator of man, has the right to set standards of how we should live. Not only does God deserve our obedience, but he sets these standards for our loving direction so that we can live a happy, fulfilled life. God is head over all, man is the head of woman, and the head of a man is Jesus.
I know what was just said that religion is the only good argument against homosexual lifestyles… but did you know that those who do not have religion also set laws among themselves based on their own reasonings and conscience? Laws that are against murdering, stealing, even prostitution?? God forbids Stealing, Murder, Prostitution or fornication and adultry. If this is natural without God’s standards or religion in view, we must have some conscience and need concerning how to live in harmony with one another, and God’s standards are really not burdensome in this case.
