Our National Flowers

It’s interesting how most countries have a “national flower”. What about the UK?

In the United Kingdom (meaning England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland) each of the countries have their own national floral emblem. England’s national floral symbol is the Tudor rose. Wales national floral symbol is the leek, the sessile oak, or the daffodil, which represents unrequited love. Northern Ireland’s national flower is the shamrock, the flax, or the orange lily, which represents pride, wealth, and hate. And finally, Scotland’s national floral emblem is depicted by the heather, the Scottish bluebell, which depicts humility or the thistle.

Traditional Chinese Furniture

I wanted to share my impressions of a book I recently completed called “C. L. Ma Collection: Traditional Chinese Furniture from the Greater Shanxi Region.” It was written by Curtis Evarts and published by C. L. Ma Furniture in Hong Kong in 1999. Bottom line: I love this book! I love it as it contains three insights that I have not seen elsewhere. First, Ming and Qing furniture were made with woods other than the well known huanghuali, zitan, and chicken wing woods, which are considered “hardwood” in China. Second, there is a difference between the Chinese and Western definitions of “hardwood” and “softwood.” “….Western vernacular, wherein “softwood” implies soft coniferous woods like pine, fir and cedar, and “hardwood” implies wood from deciduous trees of varying hardness like walnut, cherry, and oak – these latter examples are classified as softwoods in the Chinese tradition.” Third, nails are used in early Chinese furniture construction. Nails are used to “…attach table aprons to the underside of their tabletops and to the legs. Standing spandrels are frequently attached with nails at the top. Deep humpback stretchers are also attached to the aprons above with nails….”

Personalized Story Books – Are they right for you?

That is where deciding to invest in children’s personalized story books becomes an intelligent choice. These books are created by software that allows you to have your child’s name inserted into the story along with her friends names so your child can imagine being part of the story. Your child can keep these treasures for years to come. Here are three reasons why making the choice to purchase these books can benefit your children.

Which heart rate monitor?

I have been thinking about taking the plunge and buying a heart rate monitor. A guy I work with has sworn up and down that using a heart rate monitor has helped him really reduce his time.

He says he find it much easier to find the right training zone when he runs. He suggested a Polar heart rate monitor watch, but I don’t really know much about these kinds of watches.

Someone else I know uses a Garmin, and that one has the GPS feature, which is pretty cool. And I am sure I won’t get lost if I run with that one. Like I did that time when I was in Detroit and couldn’t find my way back to the hotel.

Protecting Your Personal Information

We all know that criminals are out there, waiting to steal our credit card information. These very criminals want credit card information so they can run up the charges then leave you holding the bags – with nothing to show for it. Even though some are local, most credit card criminals are in far away lands. Worse than that, they like to hide or go by other names so it’s virtually impossible to track them down.

The most common way for criminals to get credit card information is through phishing, which involves a fake email that appears to be sent from your credit card company. Normally, this fake email states that there was an error with your account, or that it was accessed by unauthorized personnel and needs your attention.

Spotting fake emails isn’t hard to do – as long as you know what to look for. The most obvious hint for most, is the fact that they don’t even have a credit card from the company that has sent the email. For others, the link is what gives the fake email away. Anytime you get an email from a credit card that you believe to be fake, you should always hover your mouse over the link, then “right click” the link with the mouse and select “view source”. If the link is indeed fake, the website address that comes up will be something other than that of a credit card company.
